- Film noir normally included a non - digetic monologue
- A bad representation of women, usually stripper ect.
- A villain; Normally rich or a politician of some kind
- Always a women in trouble normally British with a high status. This would relate to the spider and fly convention where the detective would be led and proceed to get trapped because of the woman. The more he gets involved the more the spider wraps him up. The protagonist normally uses who until he realises shes not what he thinks she is or until he falls in love.
- The antagonist is normally a gangster who normally dies or gets put in prison. This is because of Hays law stating that in Hollywood all antagonists have to be put away in prison or killed off.
- Low key lighting. A lot of shadows used for effect. As this is a dark society and corrupt.
- Ambient sounds of the city.
- Jazz music related to the underground urban city life.
These films started as an original idea of Hollywood. This was because there were 5 big film companies which no other film companies touched. They really came into popularity from the 1940's to 50's. These where very popular and usually were only created by the 5 big film companies.
